Ever since my first trip to Las Vegas a couple of months ago, I’ve developed an entirely new appreciation for EDM. I realize this makes me sound like the stereotypical douchebags who frequent Vegas, but whatever…I get it now.

I’ll narrow this generalization about EDM to Calvin Harris, who I already loved pre-Vegas, but have been listening to at a nearly obsessive level since seeing him spin at Surrender in February. Normally, I eventually tire of and cycle out the artists I listen to at this frequency, but in Calvin’s case, I’ve continued to fuel the addiction by seeking diversity through tracks he’s remixed for other artists, and vice versa.

One of my favorites I stumbled upon recently was Eric Prydz’s remix of “Flashback,” which I almost immediately dismissed as “too trancey,” but got sucked into seconds later. My common issue with trance is that it’s just boring, but Prydz continuously layers in new beats and melodic elements to keep the remix engaging and just the right amount of complex.

I’ve heard much about Eric Prydz, but not his music itself…and if this remix is just the surface of his talent, I’ll be certain to move him to the top of my priorities at Coachella…

If you’re someone who appreciates a hearty beat like me, you will not go wrong with anything he does. Trust in me. I don’t know much about the kid, and his website doesn’t help me out much, but I DO know that he has a knack for injecting a tight beat into an already great song and making it dope. My favorite examples so far below:

I saw these guys live back in August at FYF, but I paid zero attention to the music and was mostly mesmerized by their bassist’s American flag tank top and beautiful, silky long hair that he kept whipping around and around (it was a NIGHT, ok?) But I’ve checked their actual music again upon the recommendation of a couple co-workers (who were at the same concert with me and somehow weren’t as distracted by the hair) and though I’m still deciding how I feel about them overall, I definitely am digging this one song:

Grimes in general

Speaking of lukewarm, I was staunchly lukewarm about this chick Grimes for quite some time. For a while it seemed like everyone I knew was raving about her, and I just couldn’t. get. into it. I honestly don’t know what changed since my first listen, maybe I was just able to find some songs of hers that I was really into? But I’ve been seriously INTO her music lately. Particularly Oblivion and Circumambient (links below). I think it’s because her sound is so characteristically ethereal and flowy, I only like songs of hers that either have a beat or a rhythmic hook that anchors it all down.

Robert DeLong

I had literally never heard of this guy until I went to a party where he was performing a couple of weeks ago, a party that completely attracted me with a much bigger name performer. Robert DeLong just sounded like a middle-aged jazz saxophonist to me (a la Duke Silver), so I didn’t bother looking into him beforehand. DeLong blew the bigger name band out of the WATER live. And to boot, he’s doing something different than anyone else is doing right now: fusing indie with a little house with a little dubstep. Forgive me if anyone else has already done this, but it’s the first I’ve heard and I’d LOVE recommendations of others doing the same.

I’d always considered myself fairly well-versed in the Wu Tang Clan discography but somehow I overlooked this particular track. Last weekend, I was in the dressing room at Urban Outfitters which had mostly been playing whiny, watery hipster music and then THIS came banging over the speakers so I obviously had to immediately dance and simultaneously Shazam. Lo and behold, it was a track I had never heard from my beloved Wu Tang, and it’s been knocking on my headphones ever since.

“Solace” - Fyfe (If you’re a twentysomething and can’t relate to this song, go fuck yourself.)

“Time” - Wiz Khalifa (He gets a lot of disdain from critics but he gets on some fresh beats, it cannot be denied. Plus he and his wife just had an adorable baby, have a heart for chrissake!)

“Soon The New Day” - Talib Kweli feat. Norah Jones
